Sonoma State University decided to cut all NCAA division Ⅱ athletic programs. San Francisco State University has followed suit, cutting three of their programs this past week: men’s soccer, baseball, and women’s indoor track and field.
Alumni like myself wonder how these cuts will affect the overall moral, budget, and history of the University. San Francisco State University Baseball has been a program in place since the early 1930's. Despite these budget concerns the Baseball field over went renovations that took place before the 2017 season. These renovations included: construction of a new pitcher's mound, installation of new foul poles, and windscreens. This raises the question of the mismanagement of money by San Francisco State University.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, these cuts will save the school close to $1 million dollars a year. These cuts will affect the students starting July 1st. Overall, President Lynn Mahoney declared that the budget must be reduced by $25 million dollars. Declines in enrollment since the pandemic led the “athletic task force” to recommend these decisions. If chosen, these 44 students who are no longer “student-athletes”, can retain their scholarship by electing to remain students.
